According to a recent report there have been thousands of assaults on inmates and scores on guards and other jail staff this year.

Shortland Correctional Centre at Cessnock in the state’s Hunter Valley had the highest rate of assaults on inmates, as 32 inmates out of 100 been targeted.

COVID have caused additional strain as the Corrective Services had to put on additional staff for COVID-related duties in the past couple of years, which added pressure on public and private facilities.
